Most Derren fans know that as well as a mind tickler he is a very accomplished artist. His book of portraits called, er, Portraits is now available for order from amazon.

Derren Brown and Joe Power

From the Ormskirk and Skelmersdale Advertiser (an unlikely source I’ll admit) comes news of Derren Brown making a suprise appearance at psychic clairvoyant Joe Powers stage show in the West Lancashire village of Burscough.

According to the footage, Derren and Joe are making a documentary for Channel 4 together, and were both seen in Southport doing cold readings. This is the first I have heard of any such documentary and can only assume that he will go head to head with the ‘real’ psychic to see who is more successful.

Derren’s Favourite Parrot on Facebook

You may or may not know that Derren Brown loves parrots. He has one called Figaro. He is also the patron of the National Parrot Sanctuary in Friskney.

The NPS has a blue and gold macaw called Sarah that Derren has a soft spot for. An article in the Skegness Standard reveals that “he always goes to see Sarah first when he visits.”, and the NPS decided she should have here own Facebook account.

“We thought it would be a novel idea because Facebook is full of people so we thought it would be fun to have a parrot on it.”

You too can become her friend just like Derren.

Does Magic Pollute Science?

Following yesterdays article discussing mindreading tricks from a psychological angle Dr Vaughn Bell has gone on to discuss an email he received from a Mind Hacks reader called Stefano who suggests:

“…stage magicians that use psychological language actually pollute the public’s understanding of science”

Stefano goes on to criticise Derren Brown stating:

“As a psychologist, I have to say I dislike the new sort of mentalism that we’re seeing nowadays. Derren Brown (an incredibly talented performer, as you said) tries to portray his show as something more than old-fashioned magic by introducing psychological terms and studies, somewhat erratically. I understand that his use of scientific terminology might be part of the misdirection, but it really makes me cringe to see he perform ridiculous feats and justify it by citing things like the Milgram study, concentration abilities or persuasion techniques. Almost every time he mentions a psychological concept, he either misrepresents it or uses it to explain absurd stuff that he did with stooges or simply old magic tricks.”

Mind Hacks – Sleight of Mind

Dr Vaughan Bell has posted an article on Tom Stafford and Matt Webb’s website Mind Hacks discussing mindreading tricks from the psychological angle. The article is titled “Sleight of Mind” and Dr Bell was prompted to write it after watching a presentation by Keith Barry on TED.

He was reminded of points made in Derren Brown’s wonderful and becoming rarer by the minute book Pure Effect where Derren…

“…makes the fascinating point that the narrative itself is part of the redirection, and describes how framing magic tricks in psychological language leads to certain expectations which, of course, make certain redirections more easily achievable.”

Dr Bell concludes:

“This is what most impresses me about professional magicians. The slight of hand and the perceptual tricks are cool, but its the cognitive magic, the shaping of expectancies through narrative, that makes them seem so wondrous.”

The Derren Brown fanblog AboutDerrenBrown has a great article discussing the role Jerry Sadowitz was instrumental in Derren Browns meeting with Andrew O’Connor and Michael Vine that led to his first TV special and ultimately the public recognition he currently has.

It also points out that Andrew O’Conner originally approached Andy Nyman about the mindreader special, but he turned it down wanting to concentrate on his acting career.

There are no regrets from Andy who says: “Derren was a far better choice for the job than me because he’s a genuinely odd bloke,… He’s really quite unsettling.”

The BBC News website has published an interview with Derren Brown where he discusses the controversy of his “outing” as well as his intention to right a new book for the general public covering the techniques behind his effects.

He reveals that he’s a big fan of Penn and Teller pointing out that he recently saw their show in Las Vegas, saying:

“I found it heartbreaking when you find yourself gasping and you feel like a child again. Ironically you’re probably being fooled by techniques you already know.”

Trick or Treat Season Two Begins Tonight

The new series of Derren Brown’s Trick or Treat airs tonight on C4 and 10pm.

Tonights episode stars Glen who is taught how to win at pub quizzes by speed reading books with his fingers in the standard “heavy metal devils horns” position.

The About Derren Brown blog has some insider knowledge about this episode from the rather mysterious davorg who was at the pub when the quiz was taking place. He says:

For a number of years now we’ve taken part in a weekly quiz in a local pub…. So we weren’t too surprised to be invited to one a couple of months ago. The difference with this one was that it was being filmed by Channel 4. According to the quizmaster, they had been in touch with him as they wanted to make a documentary about the rise in pub quizzes in London. They had asked him to put on a night that they could film. He got together about thirty of his best teams and Channel 4 added in another couple of teams – one of which was one man one his own.

I do hope this series is better than the last, and I’ll reserve judgement until it airs, although I’m not holding my breath.

As you may or not know as well as being a brilliant mentalist, Derren Brown is also a superb artist (makes you sick doesn’t it).

It appears that he plans to have a book full of his portraits published later in the year (this has now been released). Derren’s website states the following:

Derren will hopefully have a new book out by Christmas featuring loads of his fantastic portrait paintings. Now who wouldn’t want to see that in their stocking?
