No sooner have the BBC announced a prime time magic show than ITV announce one of their own.

From the press release:

“Penn & Teller: Fool Us, ITV1’s brand new entertainment extravaganza is an original and daring TV magic show – starring the world famous magic double act – Penn & Teller.

…this 90 minute spectacular throws down the gauntlet to every aspiring magician in the UK to perform their most mystifying trick to fool Penn & Teller.

Las Vegas legends Penn & Teller will have no prior knowledge of either the performers or the planned trick. They’ll be sitting in the audience just like everyone else, watching every move the guest magicians make. And, if any illusionist comes on and fools the professionals – they will win a five star trip to Las Vegas to perform as the opening act in Penn & Teller’s world famous show at the Rio Hotel & Casino.

Every magician will be performing for high stakes. Whether it’s a grand stage illusion or a tiny trick of sleight of hand, whether it uses tigers or toothpicks, if they are good enough to fool Penn & Teller then they get to perform in Vegas with the iconic duo.

Penn says: “Nothing would give me or Teller more pleasure than to hand over Vegas tickets to someone – anyone – who has the nerve to stand in front of us, monkey with us, leave us baffled and ultimately blow us away with their brilliance. The BBC plumped for Lenny Henry to host their show, and ITV have followed suit with Jonathan Ross.

It’s a real shame that neither of them tried a little harder in their choice of presenters, but it will be great to see Penn & Teller back on UK television.

With these two new shows in the pipeline: is magic the new Strictly/Skating/Singing sensation?

Geeky podcast ShiftRunStop has interviewed the marvellous Andy Nyman.

In the recording he mentions his time working with Derren Brown both on television, and for his stage shows.

He talks about working on Charlie Brooker’s Dead Set, including making sure he could keep his severed head after failing to keep an amputated leg on another occasion.

His stage show Ghost Stories, currently showing at the Duke of York theatre is discussed. He talks of his love of horror, and hints at a possible tour of the show next year.

He held a naming discussion on twitter (where else) and the name he liked most of all was Rasputin named, of course, after Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin the russian mystic.

Will Goldston, Dave and Dusty

I’ve just stumbled upon this wonderful Pathe newsreel dating from 1946.

It shows the eponimous Dave and Dusty visiting Will Goldston’s magic shop in London.

It includes footage of Will, and another magician performing a disappearing birdcage trick.

Dave and Dusty start playing with ventriloquists dummies making a GI dummy say “Got and gum chum?” and are soon scared from the shop as another dummy springs to life.

Here is a wonderful item of magical history for sale: Will Goldstons Instantaneous Card Production dating from the early 1900’s. As the advertisement states:

Very rare and vintage Instantaneous Card Production from Pocket Set – a bit of very early 20th century magical history. Made and marketed by Will Goldston – from his shop at 14, Green Street, Leicester Square, London. This is an amazing pair of original Will Goldston card indexes, with the original instructions by Will Goldston. The indexes and instructions are in fantastic condition, especially considering their age.
The indexes are made from stiffened black linen cloth and could still be used today, however one would most likely keep them in a collection. The instructions are original and complete, with only a very small crease in on of the corners. This is a must for any serious magic collector, as I have not seen another example as fine as this one.

I couldn’t agree more.

I am fortunate enough to own a copy (number 252 originally owned by Bennett Scott) otherwise I’d be bidding myself. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a piece of magical history. I don’t make a habit of plugging other peoples auctions, but this is a rare find and deserves to be once again owned by a member of the magical set.

From the Ormskirk and Skelmersdale Advertiser (an unlikely source I’ll admit) comes news of Derren Brown making a suprise appearance at psychic clairvoyant Joe Powers stage show in the West Lancashire village of Burscough.

According to the footage, Derren and Joe are making a documentary for Channel 4 together, and were both seen in Southport doing cold readings. This is the first I have heard of any such documentary and can only assume that he will go head to head with the ‘real’ psychic to see who is more successful.
