Potter and Potter auctions are holding a rare posters auction on 26 March 2011 offering some outstanding early magic posters.

You can download the catalogue to see what’s on offer and view pictures of the selection available.

The range is extensive from good value Tarbell right up to high priced original Thurston posters.

Of particular interest to me is a wonderful colour lithograph of Carl Devo (better know as Will Goldston), but unfortunately the price may be out of my league.

I notice that Potter and Potter auctions also have an ebay store selling a range of other magic collectables.

No sooner have the BBC announced a prime time magic show than ITV announce one of their own.

From the press release:

“Penn & Teller: Fool Us, ITV1’s brand new entertainment extravaganza is an original and daring TV magic show – starring the world famous magic double act – Penn & Teller.

…this 90 minute spectacular throws down the gauntlet to every aspiring magician in the UK to perform their most mystifying trick to fool Penn & Teller.

Las Vegas legends Penn & Teller will have no prior knowledge of either the performers or the planned trick. They’ll be sitting in the audience just like everyone else, watching every move the guest magicians make. And, if any illusionist comes on and fools the professionals – they will win a five star trip to Las Vegas to perform as the opening act in Penn & Teller’s world famous show at the Rio Hotel & Casino.

Every magician will be performing for high stakes. Whether it’s a grand stage illusion or a tiny trick of sleight of hand, whether it uses tigers or toothpicks, if they are good enough to fool Penn & Teller then they get to perform in Vegas with the iconic duo.

Penn says: “Nothing would give me or Teller more pleasure than to hand over Vegas tickets to someone – anyone – who has the nerve to stand in front of us, monkey with us, leave us baffled and ultimately blow us away with their brilliance. The BBC plumped for Lenny Henry to host their show, and ITV have followed suit with Jonathan Ross.

It’s a real shame that neither of them tried a little harder in their choice of presenters, but it will be great to see Penn & Teller back on UK television.

With these two new shows in the pipeline: is magic the new Strictly/Skating/Singing sensation?

We’ll see…

The BBC have announced a new prime time Saturday night show called “The Magicians”. The show will pair World class magicians with celebrities who will do battle each week and is fronted, rather strangely, by Lenny Henry.

Here’s what the BBC press release states:

“The Magicians sees three of the magic world’s most successful practitioners do battle across five weeks, in the world of magic’s first competitive competition on UK screens.

Against the stunning backdrop of a specially-created set on Pinewood Studios, each Magician will perform with a different celebrity partner each week; with the three pairs performing illusions from the classic to the never-attempted-before and adapting their respective roles as the challenge or trick dictates.

The Magicians will be pushed to excel beyond their own favoured speciality, be it escapology, illusion or sleight of hand card tricks, as the tournament will throw weekly challenges and themes designed to best test the competitors’ originality, ingenuity and ambition with many large scale stunts set to be attempted.

Just as audiences in theatres have shown their approval or otherwise for the art of illusion through the centuries, only the studio audience will determine which magician is victorious each week and ultimately triumphs across the weeks.

There are no judges and no phone lines. The same three magicians battle each week – those that amaze the audience most will win, whereas the pair that receive the least applause will be asked to close the show with an uncomfortable, dangerous or impossible forfeit of a trick that no-one will want to tackle.

In addition, viewers at home will be able to both enjoy and learn interactively via a series of exclusive tricks and step-by-step guides to give budding magicians an introduction to the art.”

Filming starts on 1st December, and tickets to the recordings can be obtained here. The show is due to air in the new year.

Memoirs of a Flea Circus

The other evening I received a lovely email from a gentleman from Massachusetts who attended one of the last flea circus acts as it toured the USA in the early sixties.

He recounts in vivid detail his memories of the show, and wanted to share his experience with me.

What follows is his email in full:

“When I was around 14-15 I went to an event called “The Springfield Esposition” which still runs today. A man who gave us transportation to the fair told us to go over to a trailer, and that it would cost us $5.00 (which was a lot of money back in 1961-62) and see a flea circus.

He told us that we’ll never again see another one.

The owner of the trailer explained how fleas have a very short life span and that their training takes proportionately a large amount of their life. I say it like that because I don’t actually remember the actual span of time for either of those things just mentioned.

It was well worth it and quite enjoyable. The owner held a large magnifying glass from behind a half circular table allowing access for everyone to view. He had containers with fleas inside and one-by-one removed them by their harnesses in order for them to perform.

He had a race track where they raced around a small mock-up of a stock car racetrack, a football field where the fleas were placed on their backs in an attempt to kick field goals which was a tin foil ball placed onto their tiny feet. Now, I enjoy American football and they didn’t fair out quite as well as some of the field goal kickers of today’s teams, but they evidently didn’t practice a great deal either.

I was telling my work partner about seeing the flea circus and he thought I was lying to him. Seemed pretty unbelievable to him and if I hadn’t seen it I might have had difficulty believing it also. He’s 72 yrs. old and I figured that he would have been around during the days where there must have been a good number of these shows around. Not so though! Oh, well just thought I would write and tell you this stuff.”
