Sorcerer’s Apprentice Episode One
"... will need to perform, live and breathe magic"
The episode begins with our 14 new students being taken by house mistress Miss Ford in a bright red 1930’s autobus to the school that will be their home for the duration of the series.
Whilst waiting outside the school, the sorcerer himself (Max Somerset) appears in a puff of smoke, and informs the students of a few house rules. After declaring that mobile phones would not be allowed in house, a typically ‘Somerset’ stunt takes place when the afore mentioned phones are collected on a silver tray and seemingly destroyed by way of a large hammer much to the chagrin of the students. Of course nothing is as it seems and the phones are restored.
After being kitted out with new Victorian school clothes, and informed that hair gel would not be allowed, the students are introduced to their teachers. The girls will be taught by Miss Evans, and the boys by Mr Knight. Miss Evans is Australian magician Sophie Evans, last seen performing at the Magic Castle, Los Angeles, whereas Tariq Knight was recently seen in hidden camera magic show “Playing Tricks”.
After being issued their magic boxes, the students were demonstrated a color changing hanky routine, and some card flourishes. The next, rather unnecessary, task was to memorise the “Magic Oath” and then off to dinner.
At the dinner table Mr Somerset performs a great cups and balls routine, culminating in a live chick being found under one of the cups. This was a great ending to the show, but I’d like to have seen more routines like this within the half hour. A promising start, we’ll see how the show progresses.
